It seems that this man (Wagner), a gent who was far ahead of his time, theorized that the Earth’s continents (sial) actually floated upon an underlying basaltic mass (sima), and that these continents very slowly traveled across that mass, separating more as the eons passed? “A fact now recognized as Plate Tectonics!”
To lend credence to his theory, “Dear Old Wagner” neatly fit the continents together, like a giant crossword puzzle, and in the process, even displayed how flora, fauna, and even mineral deposits on the various continents coincided at various points of separation.
Back when I studied geology, however, Wagner was considered somewhat of a crackpot (opinion), as was my own belief in the possibility of lateral (or horizontal) faulting?
I also remember a (so-called) crazy geologist who once insisted that radioactive minerals could be found near the four-corners region, and at first, he too was dismissed as a daydreamer. “Oh how beliefs, and even facts, have changed in just a relatively short span of time!”
Nowadays, we accept as a fact that the continents do indeed move by way of tectonic plates, and that Pangia, the super continent has (like a human cell), separated to create the world as we now know it. And it will continue to do so until the mighty Pacific Ocean itself, occupies a smaller area than does the Atlantic today?
Yes indeed, we do reside upon a world of great fragility! And contrary to even current religious and scientific beliefs, mankind may be as transient and temporary as a wisp of wind! What would it take, after all, to sweep us away as a race? An asteroid similar to the one that struck off of the Yucatan eons ago, global warming perhaps, giant tsunamis created upon the oceans floor, or a multitude of other natural forces, the likes of which we can not even begin to comprehend?
This is not some doomsday scenario, but rather a distinct possibility of a future that may be nearer than you want to believe! As a matter of fact, many scientist now claim that it is just a matter of time before we join the dinosaurs in that realm of oblivion. A region where the tides of time, and even the universe itself, will not even know (nor care) that mankind ever even existed! But in the meantime, we can continue to live in our own little fantasyland of invulnerability, believing in our almost god-like nature?
“What fools we mortals be!”
